Why cannot Dhoni play as a specialist middle order batsman

Dhoni is currently being treated as an also-ran in the race for the much coveted middle order position. After Sachin Tendulkar, the immediate choices for the Indian cricket's middle order positions are Saurav Ganguly,Laxman and Yuvraj Singh. But typically, the Indian cricket team management seems to think that a strokeplayer like Dhoni can come in only at number 7 and not earlier
